Chapter

Fifteen

Maple Creek was one of those places where no one locked doors. As the envelope on the seat testified, the residents in Maple Creek were more likely to use an unlocked door to leave something behind than actually take anything.

I opened the envelope and pulled out the contents.

It was a will. I didn’t want to keep Grams and Amy waiting, so I slid it back into the envelope and tossed it on the passenger seat. I raced to Grams’ condo, where the three of us passed the pages around.

It appeared that Emily was very much the apple of her father’s eye, at least as far as the will was concerned. Most of the financial resources from her father’s estate would have gone to her. Christopher left nothing to the other children or his current wife, Anna. They certainly wouldn’t have wanted for anything, but Emily was obviously the favored heir.

“This is interesting,” Grams said, handing me part of the will that dictated Christopher’s controlling shares of the bank would be passed to Emily. “I always thought he was grooming his son to take over the bank.”

The will stipulated that the family home would be in Anna’s name unless something happened to the two of them, in which case, it was Emily’s. Kenneth would receive the Taos vacation home, along with a sizable portfolio of stocks in other companies.

Very little would have gone to Daniel, Emily’s youngest brother, or their stepsister, Amanda.

“What a jerk,” Grams commented, reading more pages. “Who would write such an unfair will?”

“Whoever left this for me must have wanted me to discover the motive,” I remarked. “Jealousy.”

If any one of the siblings knew about the provisions in the will, it would have been the obvious motive. Murder their sister, make it look like an accident, and Daddy has to change the will.

“Who do you think could have given this to you?” Amy asked.

“Who knows?” I replied. The family attorney would have had a copy, but he or she would have ruined their professional reputation by passing it along to me. “I’ll call Peter and ask if he has any idea,” I said. “Surely he would know.”

Before I made that phone call, I knew I needed to share the will with Deputy Debbie. It would go at least a little way to help clear Sheriff King’s name.

Amy and I cleared the table and did the dishes. “If it’s okay with you, I was thinking of getting a start on the murals while you go to the sheriff’s office,” she said.

“You don’t have to do that,” I replied. “You’re on vacation. Besides, it’s still a little chilly out.”

“I know. But it’s kind of fun. I think it’s relaxing.”

I told her that I wouldn’t be long, and I would join her as soon as I could.

“Take your time,” she replied with a shrug.

Debbie’s face showed no emotion as she read through the will. “You said someone left this in your Jeep?”

“That’s right.”

“Hmm.” It was the last thing she said before she finished reading it.
